Build a browser agent that completes a real multi-step task on websites you are allowed to automate, and show that it is reliable and safe.
The brief
Choose one task type and build an agent for it. Good options:
- Research assistant: given a question, visit a defined set of public sources, gather facts and return a cited summary.
- Back-office helper: on a sandbox or demo app you host, create records, reconcile entries and download reports.
- QA agent: given a feature description, exercise your own web app, report bugs with reproduction steps and screenshots.
- Data collector: extract structured data from a site that permits it, into a validated schema.
Use sites you own, sandboxes, or sites whose terms and robots.txt permit your use. Document that you checked.
Requirements
- Justification. Why a browser, and why this level of control (script, hybrid or agentic). Confirm no suitable API exists.
- Page representation. Accessibility snapshots by default, with screenshots where needed. Measure tokens per step.
- Action set. A small, documented tool set with actionable errors, step cap and cost cap.
- Reliability. Condition-based waits, per-task isolated contexts, trace recording and a run-to-run success rate over at least 20 runs.
- Hybrid mode. Record a successful run as a script and replay it. Fall back to the agent when it breaks. Compare cost and time.
- Safety. Domain allow-list, secrets injected outside the model, an approval gate for risky actions, and results of an injection test page.
- Respectful behavior. Rate limiting, honest identification and robots.txt handling.
- Write-up. Architecture diagram, success and failure analysis with traces, cost per task, and a "known limits" section.
Suggested path
| Step | Output |
|---|---|
| Pick task and confirm permission | scope note |
| Script it by hand with Playwright | working baseline script |
| Add the agent loop with snapshots | agent v1 |
| Add waits, isolation and tracing | repeatable runs |
| Measure 20 runs, fix top failures | reliability table |
| Add safety controls and attack test | security report |
| Record and replay the hybrid path | cost comparison |
| Write up and publish | public repo |
Stretch goals
- Run tasks in parallel contexts with per-site concurrency limits.
- Add a vision fallback for pages whose structure is poorly labeled.
- Benchmark your agent on a public suite such as WebArena and compare with your own task results.
- Expose your tool set as an MCP server for other agents to use.
Share it
Publish the repo with the evaluation data and traces (with sensitive data removed). Honest numbers, such as "17 of 20 runs succeeded; failures were pop-ups and an expired session", demonstrate engineering judgment better than a perfect demo video.
Where to go next
Run a realistic web benchmark locally against your own agent.
Go deeper into testing, tracing and CI.
Package your browser tools as a reusable server.
